Soils - Determination of In-Place Density of Soil Using an Elastic Membrane
CAN/BNQ 2501-054 is a national standard that specifies a test method used to determine the in-place density of soils using an elastic rubber membrane. Note that this test cannot be used on soil that deforms under slight pressure or when the volume of the hole cannot be kept constant. The test is limited to soils containing particles no greater than 5 mm in diameter, and it requires a 100 mm diameter apparatus. The standard sets out requirements regarding five main elements:
- apparatus (container, membrane, scale, water content equipment and other equipment);
- calibrating the volume indicator;
- procedure; calculating and expressing the results (calculating the density of wet soil and dry soil);
- test report.
